Abortion, what about it?
In recent news, I read that Amnesty International reiterated its support to women's abortion rights. As a response to this, the Vatican responded saying, "Amnesty International has betrayed its mission." To add to that, Cardinal Renato Marino said,"Individuals and Catholic organizations must withdraw their support for Amnesty International worldwide." Couple of things baffled me in this call to boycott AI by the catholic church. Firstly, even if abortion is a cardinal sin in his view, does this invalidate all the effort of the AI in protecting human rights all over the world. Secondly, even if abortion is legalized, does he think that it is an easy choice for a mother to get an abortion.
All around the world, Amnesty International is the vanguard of human rights. While the entire world is busy playing their war games in its third world junk yard, it is them, who were working in Darfur, Iran, US, Eastren Europe and all the other places around the world on issues like, Gay rights, prisoner rights, immigrant and refugee rights. To put it short, they were working for the faceless, voiceless and powerless. If their support to the abortion rights, in the eyes of catholic church, invalidates all the good work AI has done, may be it is catholic church that needs some soul searching.
Secondly, the idea that women, when unrestricted, will walk into an abortion clinics and get their unborn babies aborted baffles me. This very idea that the government needs to safeguard the baby in a mother's womb, I feel is stupid, naive and dangerous. In a nation, where the government run anything is painted as a monster and encroachment on the freedoms of the people, a government run and protected womb sure looks dangerous. If at all anything, I think women need more rights to protect the sanctity of their wombs and bodies. As my dad used to say, we might see bad sons, bad daughters, bad husbands, bad wives and even bad fathers, but it very rare that we see bad mother. I don't mean that all the mothers have their kids best at their heart, but I sure think it is the final frontier of love. And if they aren't thinking about what's the best for the kid, no one else would.
